Coastal or beach erosion is the loss or displacement of land, or the long-term removal of sediment and rocks along the coastline due to the action of waves, currents, tides, wind-driven water, waterborne ice, or other impacts of storms. Beach erosion may be caused by hydraulic action, abrasion, impact and corrosion by wind and water, and other forces, natural or unnatural. Beaches are eroded both naturally as well as due to human impacts. Many areas of high erosion in beaches are due to human activities and need to be repaired or restored.
One hundred percent biodegradable GeoNatural products made of coconut fiber (coir) are excellent to restore the most beaches as well as to recover land due to erosion. Among the available products, RoLanka’s densely packed BioD-Roll coir logs play an important role in beach restoration. They provide protection for wave action, support vegetation establishment and restore land due to erosion. Single row of coir logs can be placed in coastal areas with low to moderate tides or wave action.
In severely eroded beaches, these coir logs can be placed like a pyramid as a barrier. Longer stakes are needed to anchor these pyramids made with coir logs. Also, these stakes and coir logs must be tied together to act as one unit. It is especially important to plant native coastal plants around the coir logs. This coir log barrier provides protection and suitable medium for successful plant growth. The undisturbed, mature vegetation will provide permanent protection to the eroded beach.
